Welcome to the website of The Bear 5-mile Run held each year during the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games, one of the largest Scottish Games in America.

This Bear 5-mile run begins in Linville, NC at the corner of Hwy 105 and 221. The race turns right off 221 and winds up steep climbs to the McRae Meadows, where the Games are held. It cuts across the track and up the backside to the road where you can now run 2 miles up a 1000 foot elevation gain. Your views are breath-taking, especially as you round the famous "Forest Gump" hairpin turn. You will finish at the top of Grandfather Mtn (over 5000 foot elevation) where you will be greeted by thousands of fans who have no where to go as they await the last runner.

This race filled up quick last year (less than 1 hr) and fully expect it will fill up early again this year.

This unique 5-mile run that will provide challenges that are overcome by the rewards. It is not a race for walkers.

We do ask that you read through this website before entering so you are aware of the challenge of the race as well as the challenges of the race logistics, including lodging and parking.

All finishers will receive the coveted Bear medallion.

Thank you and on behalf of our sponsor Zap Fitness/Reebok , we look forward to seeing you up at the "top" of the Bear Race.
